Reading

Read books with your child. While you are reading, stop and ask your child questions about what you are reading. You can have your child tell the story by telling about what is happening in the pictures.

Sit with your child and ask them to draw a picture of your family. After they draw the picture, ask them who everyone is and if they want you to label the picture. (Young children are continually expanding their drawing skills. The more they have the experience of drawing, the more detailed their pictures become. As they practice drawing more and more, their pictures will begin to look more and more like people.)

Write the ABC’s on a piece of paper then sing the alphabet song with your child. Point to the letters as you sing the song. When you get done, help your child point out the letters in their name. You can also sound out the letters with your child. Post the ABC sheet that you made on your refrigerator or the wall (on the level of your child) so they can see this everyday.

Mathematics

Here are a few examples of at-home activities that can help your child develop math skills:

  • Go on a shape hunt around your house. Have children find circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, ovals, etc. They can either point them out to you as they find them or you can ask them to bring you an item of each shape.
  • If this is a laundry day, have your child help sort/match socks. They can match color and size. (If it’s not laundry day, they can help sort toys by size and color.) Talk to your child about the difference in the items.
  • Write numbers 1-10 on a piece of paper. Ask your child to put items that correspond with the numbers on the paper. (Items can include small toys, cereal, socks.) Talk to your child about the numbers and the differences in quantity. Expand past 10 if your child is ready.

Be creative! Come up with more activities such as these for your child.

Science/Social Studies

Make rainsticks using an empty paper towel roll. Put items inside that will make noise as it moves. These items can include buttons and beads or other small items. Cover both ends with paper and tape (to keep items inside the roll) and then have your child make music and sounds with the rainstick. (Be careful of any small items that you may use as they could come out the end of the roll. Supervise your child while using the rainstick.)

In a shallow container, put a small amount of water. Find items around the house to place in the water to see if they will sink or float. Talk to your child about which sink and float (explain why).

Help your child draw a map that shows your house and the streets around it. (This can look like any way you want it to…just have fun with your child making the map.) Write your address on the map and talk with your child about your address.

Fold several pieces of paper in half and make a book for your child to draw in. Label it “All About Me”. Ask your child to make a self-portrait and draw their favorite things. Label the favorite things.

Have your child write “letters” to everyone in the home. Once they are done, encourage them to be a mail carrier and deliver the mail to everyone. (Talk about other community helpers in your neighborhood.)

PE/Health

Handwashing (Please help promote this to keep them in the school routine):

  • Turn on Water
  • Get Hands Wet
  • Apply Soap
  • Wash and scrub hands for 20 seconds (sing row, row, row your boat or the ABC song)
  • Rinse hands
  • Turn the faucet off with a paper towel

Children wash their hands after going to the restroom, before meal time, after touching class pets, blowing their nose, and after a messy activity.

Meal Time (Preschool teachers work on these skills at mealtime during school everyday):

  • Pouring own drink
  • Setting the table
  • Using a napkin
  • Asking for assistance or additional lunch items
  • Independently opening items

Gross Motor (Moving large muscles/Exercise):

-Make an obstacle course for your child around your house (encourage them to hop over items, crawl under chairs and around furniture, jump to reach items)

Show your child how to do jumping jacks. Count as they do 10. (Repeat and choose a different number.)

Stretch with your child. Have them bend forward and backward, lean side-to-side, and reach as high as they can. Have them try and touch their toes, knees, shoulders, elbows, neck, chin, etc. Doing this with your child encourages them to participate.

Put on your child’s favorite music and have a spontaneous dance party. Be sure and dance with your child. Children love to see adults being silly.
